5 Things You Should Never Use to Clean Artificial Turf (Bleach, pressure washers, harsh chemicals, etc.)

The wrong cleaning products and tools can shorten the life of your turf, damage backing, melt fibers, fade color and void manufacturer warranties. Here are the five things to never use on your artificial grass.

1. Bleach

Bleach will strip color from synthetic fibers and break down the urethane backing over time. It also kills the beneficial properties of any odor-control infill you’ve had applied.

2. Pressure Washers

A pressure washer at the wrong PSI lifts infill, flattens blades and can tear seams. We use a soft-rinse method that cleans without destroying the structure of your lawn.

3. Acidic Cleaners (vinegar, citric acid)

Vinegar is a popular “natural” cleaner, but acids degrade the fibers and can leave a sticky residue that attracts dust and bacteria.

4. Petroleum-Based Solvents

Gasoline, kerosene, mineral spirits — all of these dissolve the polyethylene used in most artificial turf. Even a small spill should be soaked up with absorbent material (kitty litter works) and the area professionally cleaned.

5. Hot Water

Boiling or near-boiling water can melt fibers, especially on cheaper turf. Always rinse with cool or room-temperature water.
