Cleaning vs. Replacing Artificial Turf: Which One Actually Saves You Money?
June 4, 2026 · Squeaky Clean Turf Team
When artificial turf starts to smell, fade or flatten, a lot of homeowners assume it’s worn out and start pricing replacements. In the vast majority of cases, that’s a mistake — a professional deep clean costs a fraction of replacement and fixes the same problems. Here’s how to tell which one you actually need.
What replacement really costs
New artificial turf in Greater Phoenix typically runs $8–$15+ per square foot installed once you factor in removal of the old turf, base prep, materials and labor. For an average backyard that’s several thousand dollars — often $3,000 to $10,000+ — plus days of demolition and disruption.
A professional deep clean and odor treatment is usually a few hundred dollars and done in a single visit. So before you replace, it’s worth knowing what cleaning can actually fix.
Problems that cleaning solves (so you don’t need to replace)
Most of the reasons people think their turf is “done” are actually maintenance issues:
- Dog urine smell — caused by ammonia salts and bacteria in the backing, not damaged turf. Odor extraction removes it.
- Dull, faded color — usually a layer of baked-in dust dulling the blades. Deep cleaning brings the green back.
- Flat, matted areas — compacted fibers, not dead ones. Power-brooming re-stands them.
- Slow drainage or pooling — clogged infill. Vacuum extraction restores it.
- Gritty or thin feel — displaced or compacted infill, fixed with a top-up.
If your turf has any of these, cleaning is almost certainly the answer.
When replacement really is the right call
Cleaning can’t fix physical failure. Consider replacement only if:
- The turf is torn, unraveling, or separating at the seams.
- The blades are physically worn flat and won’t stand back up even after brooming (usually turf well past its 10–15 year lifespan).
- There’s structural base failure — major dips, exposed backing, or drainage built wrong from the start.
Even then, it’s worth a professional opinion first. We’ll tell you honestly if a clean won’t do it — we’d rather earn a repeat customer than sell you a service that won’t help.
A simple rule of thumb
If the problem is smell, color, matting or drainage, clean it. If the problem is physical damage to the turf or base, replace it.
The overwhelming majority of “my turf is ruined” yards we see just need a thorough clean. It’s cheaper, faster, and far better for the landfill.
The bottom line
Replacement is a last resort, not a first response. Before you spend thousands, see what a professional clean can do — most of the time, your “worn out” turf has years of life left in it. Get a free quote and we’ll give you a straight answer.
